Jesus said that every person who hears his words and acts on them is like a man who built his house on the rock. When a violent storm came and hit the house it stood firm. It was SOLID, reliable, and unshakeable. He went on to say that those who hear His words and refuse to act on them are like a man who built his house on the ground, without a foundation. When the violent storm came the house was destroyed. It was unstable and shaky. Just a short time after saying these words Jesus, who was the most SOLID man to ever live, was destroyed. Although his life was built on a perfect foundation he was cut off, knocked down, and killed by the storm of God’s wrath. He died on the cross so that although we are people without a SOLID foundation we could be freely forgiven and given a SOLID starting point, in relationship with God.
Your four years of college are foundation building years. They will likely set the course for the rest of your life. If you develop habits of believing God’s Word, putting it into practice, and allowing it to deepen and transform your character you will be like a well built house. But if you stubbornly build your life pursuing personal pleasure, money, fame, and success, your house, though nice on the outside, will be destroyed by the storms of life.
This year we will be examining the Scriptures and asking God to transform us in every area of our lives. We desire for everyone who walks through our doors to be clearly challenged to live a SOLID life. If we were to be SOLID in our beliefs, practices, and character qualities Jesus would be made famous in our places of work, classes, families, and among our friends. We will urge and encourage you to say with the Psalmist “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way” (Psalm 139:23-24) for His glory. Our lives are too short, eternity is too long, and God is too good for us to spend our lives for anything less than Him.
